RNAScope: Enhancing the Toolkit for Molecular Diagnostics – a pathologists perspective
Short description:
RNAScope provides a new dimension for analyzing histological slides on the molecular level. The unprecedented sensitivity and specificity of the technique allows identification of cellular and viral RNA at single cell resolution. We have shown that RNAScope can be effectively combined with immunohistochemistry thus ascertaining the identity of the cells expressing the target viral or cellular RNA. We show that as long as proper positive and negative controls are used RNAScope can be a reliable source of molecular information in situations where relevant protein markers are missing.
